Sister Act The Musical at the London Palladium Theatre follows Disco diva Deloris Van Cartier (Patina Miller) witnesses a murder she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an up tight Mother Superior (Sheila Hancock).

Deloris uses her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir Deloris breaths new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood. Sister Act sparkles and lights up the London Palladium.

Based on Whoopi Goldberg's smash-hit movie, Sister Act The Musical features a brand new score by 8 time Oscar winner Alan Menken whose credits include Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and most recently the hit movie Enchanted. The Sister Act score is fresh and songs include Take Me To Heaven, Fabulous Baby and the title song Sister Act.

The following Sister Act casting has been announced at the London Palladium Theatre:
Mother Superior - Sheila Hancock
Deloris - Patina Miller
Monsignor Howard - Ian Lavender
Shank - Simon Webbe

Please Note: The matinee performance on the 18th July will be audio described.

Our Review:

****

When We Will Rock You opened in the West End, it got a mauling from the critics. I feared a similar fate for Sister Act The Musical, which has a very formulaic narrative. So whilst you could criticise some of the lines which feel slightly "panto", you only have to see the audience reaction to know that this is going to be another smash hit.

Sister Act The Musical has a brand new score written by Oscar winner Alen Menken. Songs are catchy with a solid underlying theme. After two and a half hours you’ll certainly come out humming a few of them.

The premise of the story, currently showing at the London Palladium Theatre, is a ‘party girl’ (Deloris) who witnesses her boyfriend killing a man, goes into a police protection programmes and ends up being hidden by a group of begrudging nuns in a church.

Sheila Hancock’s Mother Superior is one that slowly grows on you throughout the show. Chris Jarman plays Shank, the boyfriend/ex-boyfriend. As the villain he should ooze sex appeal and be able to show his wicked side, however these are two things which are in short supply.

Patina Miller, the American who plays Deloris, is making her West End debut in Sister Act the Musical, and has been wonderfully cast. Her voice is surely one of the most breathtaking that London Palladium stage has ever see, since Judy Garland; her comic timing is brilliant and she glistens (quite literally at times) as the leader of a new West End juggernaut which is set to be one of the resounding hits of 2009.

The sets are good enough to match Oliver using the full width and depth of the London Palladium stage and the costumes in the final scene are worth the entrance fee alone.

Sister Act The Musical is a great night out which is perfect for couples and also the whole family. Go see it before it closes at the end of October!

We had the best time: The Eagle Diner is actually a really fun place to go, great cocktails and food, and very well placed for that end of town. And Sister Act was brilliant. I cannot believe that Sheila Hancock is 78!!! Thank you once again for arranging it all for us. We will no doubt be in touch again soon.
