Description:

"Sexy, sassy and sensational - it is magnificent to see a musical that manages to be both populist and intelligent at the same time."
The Sunday Telegraph.

Evening Standard.

"Broadway's biggest blockbuster"
The New York Times

WICKED is one of the biggest shows in Broadway history. It is based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', WICKED tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

WICKED has now become one of London's hottest tickets, playing at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.

Experience this unforgettable, award-winning musical and discover that you've not been told the whole story about the land of Oz...

Rachel Tucker (finalist in BBC's I'd Do Anything)plays Elphaba and Louise Dearman plays Glinda.

Our Review:

What The Papers Say:

"Joe Mantello’s production, with designs by Eugene Lee and costumes by Susan Hilferty, is a miracle of staging and showmanship, full of witty allusions to the 1939 MGM movie, but equally determined to create its own visual world within a huge arrangement of cogs, lifts, steel structures and scenic daubs. The songs, too, cover the full range of point numbers, anthems and power ballads with a sure grasp of satirical intent and emotional energy.
Rachel Tucker, winner of the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Take Over in a Role, and Louise Dearman lead the cast as Elphaba and Glinda, and together they are simply unstoppable! Their chemistry is both hilarious and heartbreaking, playing off one another with ease. Louise sparkles with her fabulous and excited rendition of "Popular", while Rachel brought the house down with the always powerful "Defying Gravity". The two are supported by a wonderful cast, including Mark Evan's perfectly suave Fiyero and Zoe Rainey's sympathetic Nessarose." WHATSONSTAGE

"At times the show undoubtedly slips into the preachy, but mercifully Winnie Holzman's script keeps the gags coming as it cleverly subverts the film that spawned it. And Joe Mantello's production, on a Heath Robinsonish design by Eugene Lee, is packed with spectacular coups de theatre and some magical lighting effects by Kenneth Posner.
Stephen Schwartz's lyrics are occasionally touched with wit, but what he really specialises in are big gloopy power ballads that allow the two female leads to stand centre stage and soar into the stratospheric. This they do with some style.
No one could accuse Wicked of being a great musical – indeed at times it's a bit of a mess - but it proves far more enjoyable than I had dared to hope, and deserves a wider audience than adolescent schoolgirls. THE TELEGRAPH
There are flying monkeys and a giant dragon as the curtain in 'Wicked' rises - so you're never in any doubt that Joe Mantello's production of this musical prequel to 'The Wizard of Oz' will deliver fantastical spectacle. What's more surprising is its intelligence and ambition. And though the action sags in 'Wicked's second act, and there are lapses into sentimentality and didacticism, it's a powerful, buoyantly entertaining show that strikes a particularly resonant chord with teenage girls.
'Wicked's Yellow Brick Road is meandering, yet it's exhilarating to see hefty themes tackled in a barn-storming piece of popular entertainment. And the parallels to the far less rewarding original story of Dorothy and her friends are handled with sparkling wit. Yes, this is glossy and orotund; but there's more than a sprinkling of magic here, too." TIME OUT

"A musical about the casting of spells seems to have cast its own, hypnotising audiences who have embraced it not so much as a musical as an event. For this is a show that seems to tap into a genuine public appetite for spectacle, art and heart, and this demanding, sometimes commanding musical provides it in spades.
Based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, the musical offers a ferocious battle of wills (and top notes) between these two sparky young women, Glinda and Elphaba, who meet at a sorcery school (shades of Harry Potter here), presided over by battle-axe headmistress Madame Morrible.
But if it is also rather strenuously overcrowded in the narrative department, Joe Mantello's meticulous re-creation of his Broadway production is a superbly staged exercise in crowd control and stage-craft.
With its Cirque du Soleil-like production values, it's nothing less than a glittering cartoon bubble of a show." BBC

This is the best musical ever. I have now seen it twice and both times with starring Idina Menzel who won the Tony award for Best Actress in a Musical on Broadway for this part. It's such an amazing musical with fantastic music, sets, costumes...everything!

Review by Jon, Edinburgh

The show was good but not the best show I've seen in the West End. A little bit frivolous for my liking.

Review by Emma, London

Lots of green, witty nods to the original Wizard Of Oz, big chunky songs, plenty of spectacle & 2 very talented female leads. Kinda Wicked!
